Our activities

At Wicklow Democratic School we hold a wide range of activities to support, encourage and challenge our students and wider community. We are constantly evolving our range of classes and activities, responding to students’ requests and meeting parent wishes for the type of learning that works for individual students. Even if just one or two students request a new subject, we willl do our best to provide it. Students and staff collaboratively design all classes and activities and they are tailored to the students’ needs.

These activities range from staff, student, and parent-led classes in languages, arts, sciences, sports, music, drama, creative writing, and much more. Some of our classes are found in all schools, like reading, writing, and maths. But when did you last hear of a class called “But Why Though?”, “Magical Creatures”, or “The Subtle Art of Weirdness?”. We welcome all ideas that help our students find and explore their passions.

We also uniquely offer our own Forest School for students from 5 to 10, in which some of our older students support our passionate staff in leading fun and educational activities in local forests. Our kids love bird watching, tracking forest animals, making campfires, stringing hammocks, climbing trees and having epic hide and seek games.

We also organise numerous trips throughout the year. These are decided on, organised and run by our students, with minimal support from staff to manage the transport, costs and safety aspects. Our trip range from a few hours swimming at Brittas Bay, to day trips to Waterford Walls, zoos, art galleries and mountain hikes. We also run an annual international week-long trip for our older students, with recent trips to Hamburg, La Rochelle, Bulgaria and this year to Greece.

An innovative pedagogical framework shapes students’ experiences, providing them with the support, tools, and skills necessary to self-direct their learning: Learning to Learn.
